ARICEPT 5MG (DONEPEZIL HCL)
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION :
Aricept 5mg (Donepezil) is used to treat confusion (dementia) related to Alzheimer’s disease. It does not cure Alzheimer’s disease, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to function. This medication is an enzyme blocker that works by restoring the balance of natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
Aricept 5mg will not cure this disease, but should help your memory and improve your ability to think more clearly.
This medicine belongs to a group of medicines called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. They are thought to work by increasing the level of a chemical called acetylcholine in the brain.
Do not take Aricept 5mg if you have an allergy to:
any medicine containing donepezil hydrochloride
any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:
shortness of breath
wheezing or difficulty breathing
swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body
rash, itching or hives on the skin.
SIDE EFFECTS :
The most frequent adverse reactions include allergy symptoms (hives, rash, facial swelling), headache, dizziness, fatigue, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds, painful or difficult urination, seizure (black-out or convulsions).
Take it orally before nighttime. The recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily during a month. The dose may be increased up to 10 mg a day. Do not swallow or chew the tablet whole, wait till its dissolves in your mouth. While it is dissolving you may swallow from time to time.
For senior women with a low body weight, it is recommended that the dose of donepezil not exceed 5 mg daily. Donepezil can be taken with or without food at the same time every day, in the morning or evening.
The tablet should be swallowed whole with water. The rapidly disintegrating tablet should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve before swallowing with water.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.
It is important that this medication be taken on a regular schedule as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
